In the interest of back-filling some of the time I was away, here are the two best noodles I had in Hawaii. The top one is the chicken curry udon from Coco Ichibanya, which is a chain. A yummy, yummy chain. I went to the one on McCully and Kapiolani. I thought it was really good. The soup was smooth and well-balanced. If I have to complain about something it's that the curry wasn't that hot. Also I got curry stains on my white shirt from slurping up the noodles. But I guess I can't fairly blame them for that.
The bottom picture is the char sui (roast pork) tan tan ramen from Goma Tei in the Ward Center. The tan tan was excellent -- a good spicy sesame/peanut flavor. I mentioned it before, but I think there was too much char sui for the dish. It threw off the balance. Next time I'll get the straight tan tan ramen with a single piece of pork.
The Dac Biet Xe Lua pho (pho with everything) from Pho Clement 2 for dinner. Pho Clement 2 is, confusingly, on Geary. It was okay. Decent, not spectacular pho. Its advantages are (a) it's open until 10pm and (b) it's less than two blocks from the house. Oh, and unlike the Pho Clement on Clement, this restaurant does Vietnamese sandwiches, so yay!
Yeah, I have a camera again. Since Panasonic doesn't seem to be in any hurry to make any more LX3s (and heaven knows I can't afford, say, a Leica D-LUX 4 (or, haha, M8) or Sigma DP2) I just went and chose the cheapest pretty acceptable camera I could find. It's small and light and the lens is pretty slow. But it has both a fireworks and a baby mode. I don't know which is better for babies with fireworks.
'Mandarin' noodles from New Ming's. It just wasn't that good. It wasn't bad, but just sort of 'meh'. It's like they took a little bit of whatever they had lying around the kitchen and threw it together with noodles and a corn starchy brown sauce. Carnitas super burrito from Gordo's on Clement. The carnitas meat itself was pretty good, but the burrito has a whole just never came together for me.
Yesterday I had Vietnamese sandwiches for lunch, ramen (Tanpopo) with Marvin for dinner, and this curious sesame smoothie (again with Marvin) for dessert (My Favorite Cafe). The sesame smoothie was interesting. A little sweet. Definitely sesame-y. It's not quite my thing, though. I don't think I'll ever try it again.
The beef soup noodles from Tea Garden (the Taiwanese place on Mission and 2nd or so) for lunch. Delicious as always. I really do think they make a most excellent version of that. I went down with Mimi and we only ended up there because the new Mexican place next to Beard Papa (I don't remember what it was called) was closed. Again. They said they'd be open on Saturday. Ya. They said they'd be open on Friday when we rolled by on Wednesday. Ribs for dinner. I think it turned out pretty well. I used a lot of mustard in the braising liquid/bbq sauce. I love the color I got.
Vietnamese sandwiches at the Cafe Dolci with Dayo, Mimi, and Nathan. Nathan's the one that discovered the place. I had one chicken (so-so) and one pork (very good). Dinner with Jared at the Neon Noodle place in Berkeley (that's a description of their decor, not the name) -- we had a bunch of stuff, but the silver noodles in a clay pot was my favorite.
